How to teach it

  1. Actions first, words second. For the first two weeks you sing and they only do the actions.
  2. One line at a time: you sing a line, they echo it. Then two lines, then the whole song.
  3. Teach the sway. It's a waltz (ONE-two-three). Sway side to side on each ONE.
  4. Hold the long notes ("to-DAAAY", "Shep-HEEERD"). Close your raised hand when the note ends.
  5. Sing it every meeting at Good-baa: once slowly, once "for the mums and dads".

Skit walkthrough video

One narrated slide per scene with a stage map. 4½ min. Share it with helpers before the first rehearsal.

The skit, scene by scene

Cast: Shepherd (you or a helper) · Narrator (a helper at the side, reading the story) · every child is a lamb · one "lost lamb" · an optional friendly Lion.
Props: staff, a blanket or bench for the hills, a blue cloth for water, and a bush (a chair with a green sheet).

1 · Wake up, little lambs (1 min)

Lambs curled up asleep. The Shepherd teaches the audience to answer "BAA!". "Come, little lambs!" → everyone: "BAA!" The lambs follow the Shepherd once round the stage.

2 · What my Shepherd gives me (1½ min)

Lambs sit in a row. Each stands and says one line: "He gives me green grass!" · "He gives me cool water!" · "He keeps me safe!" · "He knows my name!" · "He gives me food!" · "He gives me my family!" · "He carries me!" · "He is always with me!" · "He finds me when I'm lost!" · "He loves me!" All together: "Jesus is my Shepherd!"

3 · One is missing! (1½ min)

The lost lamb tiptoes behind the bush. Everyone counts, then: "ONE IS MISSING!" The Shepherd searches and asks the audience. A tiny "baa…" from the bush. Found, a big hug, walk back together. "HOORAY!"

4 · The lion (optional, 1 min)

A friendly lion gives a soft, silly roar. The lambs huddle behind the Shepherd: "Go away, lion! These are MY lambs!" All: "Our Shepherd keeps us safe!" Leave it out if anyone is scared.

5 · Finale (1 min)

Lambs in one row facing the audience. All: "The Lord is my shepherd. He gives me everything I need." (Psalm 23:1). Sing "Jesus Is My Shepherd" with the actions, bow, and one big "BAA!"
